nerd monitor webmaster tool Daily TO DO List to monitor the health of your site

OK, it’s time to get nerdy again. Below is the list of recommendations to SEO professionals, that seriously want their site to remain healthy. Ok, are you ready?! Let’s get it on!

1. Find “unknown pages” in the search engine system’s index

To check indexed pages is the best way to see if everything is well. If someone hacks (unauthorized access) your site or part of your site and will attempt to redirect all the weight to their own resources, then these pages will appear in the search results when using site: operator in Google. You will need to type in site:http://yoursite.com into the search box in Google and hit enter.

2. Check the total number of indexed pages

If you notice unusual raises or falls in the number of indexed pages, then, most likely there is a problem. Maybe there is a index error or a bad page code. Make sure that this number doesn’t all of a sudden fluctuate either way.

3. Check your site for mistakes in the webmaster panel

Google has a very useful tool located at http://www.google.com/webmasters, If the search engine finds errors on your site, it will let you know on the spot.

4. Constantly check outgoing links to see if all of them are normal

For this we can use the Xenu software, which is simple to use and free. If your site is a small one, then bad outgoing links can create serious problems. Therefore, check for spam all the time and get rid of it of course.

5. Keep an eye on the 404 errors and dead links on your site

These links can also be found using Xenu, or using the webmaster panel.

Note to self:

The above steps need to be done regularly which will make you aware of any issues and will quickly fix them. In addition you will always know if your site is properly optimized for the search engines.

Feel free to let me know if there are any questions in the “comments” area. I will be happy to go over them!
